SIRE: Ch. Sherwood Silent Snicker
DAM: Am/Can BISw Ch. Markwright's Promiscuous, ROMX, 1988 KCA Select Award Winner
WHELP DATE: 05/25/1992
DIED: 07/13/2006

Smokee is a very well structured, correct kees, with moderate reach and drive. He exhibits his carriage and his long neck in the show ring. He has true silver and black color. His face has correct kees markings as well as being well pigmented. He has a full body and stands 19" tall. His front is what most kees people wish they could have in their kees fronts. His temperament is very sweet, gentle and livable! Hard to come by in today's high-energy keeshonden.

Smokee was campaigned up through 1998 in the midwest. He did very well there, being shown by his co-breeder, Kathy Stekli-Barker. He was ranked #1 show KEES, 1998, in the Great Lakes Region (IL, MI, OH, WI & IN), as tabulated by Hoflin Publishing, Inc.

Smokee won the Capital Kees Club Specialty show Best of breed in April of 1999, shown by his co-breeder and best friend, Kathy "Tootie" Stekli-Barker.

He finished his Canadian Championship easily, with back to back Gr2 & Gr3 in June 1999 (shown exclusively in Canada by Kathy Stekli-Barker).

During the rest of 1999 and into 2001, SmoKee was shown mainly in the VA area by his owner/handler, Debra Milligan of Oakwood kees. When not in the ring, his favorite place to be, SmoKee was a wonderful companion dog at home with the Milligan family: Doug, Debra and Michael.

Smokee is now in his "Veteran" years and won the Veteran Dog Class at the Capital Keeshond Club Specialty 4/15/2000 in a field of impressive males, shown by Tootie.

Sad news came in November of 2002 when SmoKee's closest friend and owner, Debra, died after a nearly three year struggle with cancer. Because the family could no longer care for all the dogs, SmoKee came to live back where he was born, here at A*starz. He will stay here until he is ready to join Debra. He is a happy old dog here and loves to get on the grooming table and be groomed as he was most happy as a show dog.

He went to the Kees National in 2004 (held in Lawrence Kansas) and was shown in the Veteran's class. He was in his element, showing off! In 2005, SmoKee attended the Kees National held in Columbus Ohio and was awarded Best Veteran in Sweepstakes (the oldest male there AND on his 13 year birthday!) in a field of over 20 old dogs! He was expertly groomed and presented by his co-breeder, Kathy Barker. We rec'd many compliments over the National weekend on this 13 year old wonder dog!

SmoKee is OFA'd, stifles vet certified tight, CERF and thyroid normal. SmoKee was neutered as he became a Veteran dog. We have sperm put away that will be used by A*starz in the future.

NOTE 07/13/2006: Smokee lived to be just over 14 yrs of age:
It is with a sad but happy heart that I announce the news that Mr. Smokee-Bear (aka Am/Can BISS Ch. A*starz Conan) has left us. His last day with us was 7/13/2006. He was just over 14yrs of age. It was a hard couple of days for me as Smokee wasn't feeling well and there seemed there was nothing I could do to help him. I took him to the vet on 7/13 Thurs and they took xrays showing he had dark spots (indicating cancer) in his intestines and near his liver. The vets said he could live a day, a week or a month, but not much more. Based on that, we made the decision to let Smokee join his owner, Debra Milligan (who had died of small cell lung cancer at age 46yrs in fall of 2002). Smokee has been here with us since that time. He seemed happy here...........

We were with Smokee when he was born... we were with him when he said goodbye to us... but he seemed to have a smile on his face saying "I am going to be with my best person, Debra... see you later.........."

I hope Debra thinks I groomed him well, took care of his toenails and fed and loved him here when she could not. Those jobs are hers now and I'm sure she will gladly accept them.

We are so sad but also happy that our Smokee-Bear is now with is best person ... over the rainbow bridge. Smokee had the true heart of a show kees... as is evidenced by his rankings in the mid-west show scene and in Canada in his prime. His last best days as a show dog were at the 2005 Kees Natls in Columbus Ohio where he was Best Veteran at age 13yrs (the oldest male kees at the show). He had so much fun at those shows, in the hotel, being the center of attn and with his best handler, Kathy Barker !

Rest well and have fun with Debra and all the other kees and owners who are watching over us.
